How do I apply to join the orchestra?

We will ask you to provide some information about yourself, your instrument, and your recent orchestral experience (if any). Orchestra players are Grade 6 or higher. We’d love you to join us. Please click on and complete the ‘Register your interest’ form under the ‘Join Us’ tab on the website (https://chichesterso.co.uk/join-us/)

How often does the orchestra rehearse?

The orchestra’s year is divided into three terms, which coincide with the school year. Rehearsals are weekly, on Tuesday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30pm at Christ Church, Old Market Avenue, Chichester PO19 1SW. The rehearsal schedule is managed by the conductor. There is a tea, coffee and biscuits break during the weekly rehearsals.

Is there car parking at this rehearsal venue?

No. The nearest car park is at Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8PU. This is a short walk away and there are no car park charges after 6pm. The car park has 115 spaces and holds the Park Mark Safer Parking Award. It may be possible for you to get a lift to the rehearsals with another orchestra member. If you have a blue badge you may want to talk with a member of the committee about specific arrangements.

Can I join at any time?

Yes, but we would prefer you to start at the beginning of a term.

Do I need an audition?

We will invite you to join the orchestra for one of its Tuesday evening rehearsals so that we get an idea of your abilities, and you can see what it’s like for yourself. You won’t be singled out for attention. If after several rehearsals we feel that your musicianship does not meet the required standard, we will invite you to an informal discussion about the way ahead.

Does the orchestra loan out musical instruments?

The orchestra does not own any instruments, and you will need to bring your own.

Is there a minimum age requirement to play in the orchestra?

We welcome musicians of all ages and want you to feel comfortable about playing music in a friendly, non-judgemental and accepting space. If you are under 18, you will need to be accompanied by a parent, guardian or other chaperone at all rehearsals and concerts.

Am I expected to practice between rehearsals?

Some of the music is difficult, and your confidence will be much improved in rehearsals and in concerts if you know your part well and play it well. You will be able to take the music home between rehearsals. Only you can decide how much practice you need to put in.

What are the arrangements if I have mobility issues?

All the rehearsal and concert venues are fully accessible.

Will my photograph be taken while I am playing with the orchestra?

The orchestra works with local photographers to ensure that photographs are available to update the orchestra’s website and for use in any wider publicity (for example, on the Music in Portsmouth area website). If you do not want to feature in any publicity please let us know.

Does the orchestra keep any information about me?

We ask you to provide us with some details about yourself and your emergency contact(s) and to ensure that the information is up to date. We will ask you to complete, sign and return a Player’s Information form. Our information processing arrangements are compliant with the Data Protection Act 2018.

What are the insurance arrangements for me and my instrument?

The orchestra is not responsible for insuring you or your instrument. The orchestra has public liability insurance in place – as do the rehearsal and concert venues.

If I have a health issue during rehearsals will First Aid be available?

Several orchestra members are First Aid trained. There is a defibrillator (if required) inside the Tesco Express store on South Street, a few minutes away from Christ Church, our Tuesday evening rehearsal venue. If you need to take medication during rehearsals please bring it with you.

Who is in charge of the orchestra?

The orchestra is a registered charity and its committee is drawn from the orchestra members. It, and a music planning sub-committee, meet regularly to manage the orchestra’s business. The AGM takes place during the rehearsal on the second Tuesday in November and is followed by a social event.
